Casting Bread

"Cast your bread upon the waters for after many days you will find it. Give a portion to seven or even to eight for you know not what disaster may happen on the earth."

Ecclesiastes 11

The Yezidi days of fasting prior to the winter festival began this week. It is one of the times of the year when we make a concerted effort to provide the poorest of poor, the sick, the less able, the widow and the orphan with new clothes and food supplies to celebrate the festival.

The days of fasting are a time of reflection, despite the suffering, despite the ongoing hardships of life, it is a time to ponder, to ask for forgiveness . It is a time of reconciliation of conflicts, and disagreements. Before one sits to eat, forgiveness is requested and given.

We love this opportunity to go into the camp, and the tents that are still dotted through the village, and to present our gifts, to cast our bread, in time for this Eid.  We receive the greatest blessing from those who have nothing tangible to give, they bless us, "May God return the blessings upon your head", "May your hands always be open to give." It is such a joy, such a blessing to give to those who over the years have become our tribe.

This week we share photos of The Casting of Bread with you. Our portions were 30 food packs, 20 dresses, and 24 sets of hats, gloves and scarves.

May your hearts be stirred to likewise cast your bread to whoever, wherever at this season of soon to be Hannuka and then Christmas.

Next week before Christmas Day, we will be going to visit our Syriac Christian friends in the village of Av Zaruk and to give them provisions and gifts for Christmas.  If you are able to contribute to our efforts for this remote community, we would be overjoyed
