Our precious Arabian horse, Newroz, was given to us by the Kurdish Presidential family. We called her Newroz (New Day) simply because she arrived in time to celebrate the Kurdish New year, called Newroz, and she signified a new day for us.
She is a Queen, forever regal, kind, patient, intuitive, loving, caring. She has always allowed close contact with her new foals, first Almas ( Diamond ) then Sapphire, both sired by Taj who is mighty jealous for her and keeps a watchful eye over her. She is open hearted, wise and trusting.
She knows how to hold her space, and allow the wounded to connect and release their emotions. She is never in a hurry. She knows how close to pull in to everyone. She carries a gift for healing and somehow an understanding of trauma and pain.
Newroz is fighting for her life. We are still uncertain what happened, it appears that whilst doing her jumps for joy she fractured one of her front legs. It has taken us a full three weeks to track down the only portable x-ray machine in Iraq, usually used by its veterinary owner to x-ray rabbits, cats and the occasional dog.
We found an incredible vet who has become the overseer of all that is happening at the moment, who instructed the rabbit vet on how to photograph her leg. Once the results were in, we were advised to put her to sleep. I spoke for hours to the vet, whose concern and rightly so, was for her high level of pain and the fact that Arabian horses are regal even in suffering, they do not show their pain.
After hours of talking, pondering, tears upon tears, Vet Ali who was on his way to a training course on equine surgery in Egypt, agreed to give us, to give her until his return on February 22.
IF there is stabilization, no deterioration he will put a cast on her leg. No, there is no one in Iraq other than him qualified to do this.
I asked him for “mercy time”. It was a hard call for him, the well being of Newroz being his priority not our tears. He has given us time, I assured him we would provide her with 24/7 care.
We will bring medications and supplements from various regional sources, as again, there is nothing available in country.
So my friends, those of you who are praying people, I and we, Musa, Wessan, Vagar and Zirak are asking you to pray for a miracle for Newroz. That her leg will heal. That the verdict of death that she was given will be turned around for life. That the quality of her life will be good, we have no need to ride her, just to love her and allow her to love on others as much as she wants.
Please join us in our cry for healing and life. I realise that there is a time to be born, there is a time to die, but this feels wrong. This does not feel that it is her time to be put to sleep. This feels as if death is creeping in, with an attempt to steal her. We ask you to pray for recovery, for no trauma, for healing.
Thank you for your care for the animals that we have been given to steward.
Genesis 18.14 says, "Is anything too wonderful for the Lord."
Let’s push in for the wonderfuls.
Can you help?
While we hold space for Newroz - hoping and praying for healing and restoration - all our centers continue to bring transformation daily to all that come through our doors. With your help we are slowly and lovingly healing a community's trauma and pain.
